Facts about Private Investigators |
|
The private investigative industry in the USA is regulated by the licensing department or division of your state government. Most states have legislative rules and regulations governing private investigators. These laws are intended to protect the public and to insure prospective PI recruits meet and satisfy state licensing requirements.
Private investigative associations aid the industry by providing educational and training forums for private investigators to continually sharpen their skills. Some state associations have adopted special certification programs for their members. Members may earn a special distinction for a particular investigative specialty.
Before you hire or contract with a private investigator make sure to ask about or do the following:
· Ask to see the PI’s state license. · Call the state PI licensing office and check for any complaints or disciplinary action on file. · Ask about his or her experience, background and PI association membership status. · Ask for a service agreement and confirm fees, retainers, expenses and special requirements. · Ask for timely and periodic investigative reports. · Make sure the investigator is prepared to testify in court if necessary. |
